World Suicide Prevention Day started in 2003 and has been recognized every September 10th to bring awareness to the debilitating and sometimes deadly effects of mental health disorders. Millions of people suffer through mental health issues alone and never seek help either out of shame or a lack of available services. The best way to stop suicide and help those in need is with mental health and wellness therapies to treat depression and other mental health disorders and help patients regain their happiness.
At A Fresh Start Therapy, we offer mental health and wellness therapy in a warm and caring environment that is safe and encourages participation in our various behavioral and holistic programs. If you or someone you know struggles with suicide and depression, call 855.325.3909 today to learn more about our mental health and wellness therapies.
World Suicide Prevention Day
In 1999, suicide was the fourth leading cause of death for men and women between 15 – 44. The rising number of deaths led the World Health Organization and others to create the World Suicide Prevention Day to help develop awareness and help countries with zero suicide prevention programs.
They aim to develop awareness campaigns that shine the light on mental health issues and remove the stigma associated with depression and other mental health disorders. Other goals of the program include:
- Training for healthcare professionals to better understand the effects of mental health and recognize the signs of depression and suicide.
- Increase the use of evidence-based treatment programs that have a positive effect on patients.
- Prioritize research into effective treatments to prevent suicide and reducing self-harm.
- Develop suicide prevention programs in countries that make self-harm illegal.
Mental Health and Wellness Programs
Mental health issues may stem from a past or present event and change your behavior. It can be anything from a slightly uncomfortable feeling around groups or certain people to being so debilitating that you cannot get out of bed in the morning.
Mental health symptoms can range from mild to severe and can show up in a variety of ways, including:
- Depression
- Mood disorders
- Grief
- Relationship difficulties
- Job-related challenges
- Body image/eating disorders
A Fresh Start Therapy has mental health and wellness programs that help you understand your mental health issues and create healthy habits that promote happiness and well-being.
Depression Therapy
Most people do not realize they are depressed until well into their depression. It can be a gradual change in behavior that starts with feeling sad for a few days to becoming so bad that they think suicide is their only option.
A well-rounded depression therapy program will combine behavioral therapies with helping patients understand the root cause of their depression and build positive habits to help them cope when life gets stressful. These programs will include:
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
- Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT)
- Motivational and life coaching
- Individual and group therapy
While everyone may feel sad once in a while, depression is a sadness that runs deep and for an extended period of time and requires the help and guidance of professionals to achieve recovery.
Holistic Therapy
Holistic therapy involves a whole-body approach to your mental health issues by focusing your body’s energies toward healing. Healing starts from the inside, and a holistic approach to your mental health therapy can help start that healing process with programs such as:
- Meditation
- Yoga
- Nutrition
- Indoor and outdoor exercise
Combining a holistic approach to your therapy with behavioral treatment gives you the best chances at gaining control of your mental health issues and leading a normal life.
